A newspaper article in the New York Times on April 8, 1877, indicates that John McKernan and Margaret Mossey and their young family emigrated to Northfield, Washtenaw, Michigan in 1829, and later located at White Oak, Ingham Co, Michigan. However, a book entited "Portrait and Biographical Album of Ingham and Livingston Counties, Michigan" conflicts with those dates, saying that John and Margaret (Mossy) McKernan, who had been a farmer in Orange County, New York, had moved to Northfield, Washtenaw Co, Michigan in 1833 and then in 1836 moved to White Oak Township, Ingham Co, Michigan.

From John McKernan's first land purchase in 1831, and the birth of Catharine in New York in 1830, and James in Michigan in 1832, it would appear that the McKernan family moved to Michigan sometime between 1830 and 1832.

From her father's land purchases (below) we see that Ann would have been in Washtenaw in the year 1835 and in Ingham in the year 1837, which match up with the land purchases of William Faulk who was also in Washtenaw in the year 1835 and in Ingham in the year 1837. If you compare the actual locations in Washtenaw and in Ingham you will see that the McKernan family was very close to William Faulk in both places. So close in fact in Ingham, that it is reasonable to believe that the 400 acres of John McKernan were adjoining the 80 acres of William Faulk.

The U.S. General Land Office Records, 1776-2015, contains the following entries for John McKernan in the Michigan-Toledo Strip:
Jan 5, 1831, 80 acres, Washtenaw, Township 1-S, Range 6-E, Section 33
Oct 8, 1835, 40 acres, Washtenaw, Township 1-S, Range 4-E, Section 22
Aug 10, 1837, 400 acres, Ingham, Township 2-N, Range 2-E, Section 14

1840 United States Federal Census in White Oak, Ingham, Michigan:
John McKernan and family members
1 male under 5
3 males 5 through 9
3 males 15 through 19
1 male 50 through 59
1 female under 5
2 females 5 through 9
1 female 30 through 39

In 1840, there is no female between the age of 15 and 19, therefore, the daughter Ann, who would have been 18 at that time has already married and left the home.
