Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a noble family in Viterbo, Luigi Macchi was the nephew of Cardinal Vincenzo Macchi (1770-1860), former bishop of the suburbicarian see of Ostia-Velletri and secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Inquisition. Earning a doctorate in law from the La Sapienza University of Rome, Luigi was ordained priest in 1859. Privy chamberlain of His Holiness, domestic prelate and referendary of the tribunal of the Apostolic Signature of Grace, he served as vice-president of the hospice in the baths of Diocletian, judge of the tribunal of the Consulta, vicar of Cardinal Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso at the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso, vicar of Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro, archpriest of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica, apostolic visitor to the diocese of Poggio Mirteto, consulter of the Sacred Congregation of the Council, master of chamber of Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII, majordomo and prefect of the Sacred Apostolic Palace. Created cardinal deacon in the consistory of February 11, 1889 with the deaconry of Santa Maria in Aquiro, he was appointed administrator of the abbey of Subiaco on April 25, 1890. Opting for the deaconry of Santa Maria in Via Lata on November 30, 1896, he was assigned as secretary of Apostolic Briefs on December 22, 1896. Becoming cardinal protodeacon on July 11, 1899, Macchi died of an apopletic stroke in Rome and was buried in his family vault at the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
