Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Montefiascone, Mario Mocenni came from a noble family, counting among his siblings a fellow priest, Canon Msgr. Odoacre, Apostolic Protonotary and doctor in utroque iure. Receiving his education at the seminary of Viterbo and later at the University of Rome, he was ordained priest in December 1845. Professor at the named Viterbo seminary for twelve years, he entered he pontifical household as privy chamberlain supernumerary of Pope Pius IX who asked him to enter the diplomatic service and assigned him as auditor of the apostolic nunciature in Austria, electing him archbishop of the titular see of Eliopoli di Fenicia shortly thereafter. Receiving his episcopal consecration in Rome on August 12, 1877 from Cardinal Alessandro Franchi, Mocenni went on the serve as apostolic delegate in Ecuador, Perú, Nueva Granada, Venezuela, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua, and successively as internuncio in the Brazilian Empire, which appointment arrived on March 28, 1882. Named substitute of the Secretariat of State and secretary of the Cipher on October 18 that year, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of January 16, 1893 with the title of San Bartolomeo all'Isola. Opting for the suburbicarian see of Sabina and as perpetual abbot of Farfa on May 18, 1894, Mocenni died of heart disease and asthmatic complications in his apartment inside the Apostolic Palace of Vatican City. Apparently better in the morning, he insisted on getting up and even refused his usual brusque manner to be assisted to dress himself. He seated himself in his customary armchair, but shortly afterward his condition became worse. Dr. Lapponi was hurriedly called, but only arrived in time to pronounce the Cardinal's death. Exposed in the church of Santa Maria in Traspontina, his body was buried in the chapel of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide inside the local Campo Verano Cemetery. An inveterate pipe smoker who had a rack with 30 of them, one for every day, the Cardinal carried his tobacco in a golden case given to him by Kaiser Wilhelm II.
