"Bertie," as she was known to friends and family, was a family genealogist with a ready smile. She walked and recorded many cemeteries in Clinton County and Carroll County, Indiana.
She was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, while her parents were living there as young farmers. Her parents were from Indiana and had moved to Saskatchewan to farm near her father's uncle -- George Washington HOOKER, a rancher in Saskatchewan.
Bertie was a twin. She was Roberta, and her twin brother was Robert. There were two older brothers in the family (Russell and Glen), so Bertie grew up with three brothers to look out for her.
When she was just a little girl, the family moved back to Clinton County, Indiana. She graduated from Frankfort High School in 1938.
On October 15, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she married James Joseph "Joe" SHEPARD. One son and two daughters were born to the couple.
Mrs. Shepard was a lifelong Clinton County resident and a homemaker. She had been a beautician for several years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in a Sunday school class and the women's circle. She was a Pink Lady for Clinton County Hospital and a volunteer aide at Kyger Elementary School.
When she died, she had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
