Born at Grymby, near Mallines, Belgium to Jan Hendricks Stans and Mary Catherine Crijns. Father of Maurice H. Stans (Presidential Cabinet Secretary) and Lauretta Stans Gallenbeck.

A painter and decorator by profession he was best known as an accomplished coronet soloist and band leader. In 1895 at the age of 18 he became the leader of the Chaska Sodality Band. In 1902 he organized the Shakopee Cadet Band.
