DR. FLOYD MALONE BANKS, 70, retired principal from Chicago was born on September 12, 1938 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late George and Maggie Banks. Floyd graduated from Hamilton High School in Memphis, Tennessee in 1956. Floyd received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Xavier in 1960. He later received his Master Degree in Education and Doctorate Degrees in Education from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Banks also served as Principal of Daniel Hale Williams Elementary School and Dunbar Vocational High School in Chicago for the majority of his professional career. The students who attended Daniel Hale Williams and Dunbar Schools came from the Chicago Public Housing projects, but Dr. Banks did not permit them to use poverty as an excuse to be mediocre. In an effort to encourage kids to stay in school and foster school pride, Dr. Banks and his high schoolfriend,Lavaughn Bridges, the principal of Melrose High School, initiated the "Back To School Bowl". This was anannual high school football game between Dunbar High from Chicago and Melrose High from Memphis. He departed from this life at his home in Arlington on Saturday, January 17, 2009. Dr. Banks leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, Floyd G. Banks and Frank D. Banks (Trenika) of Memphis,Tennessee;two grandchildren, Nazim Banks and Yasmin Banks of Memphis, Tennessee; one sister and two brothers, Verner Echols and Booker T. Banks (Sheridan) of Chicago, Illinois and Frank J. Banks (Brenda) of Memphis, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Mary Taylor Banks of Memphis, Tennessee; one aunt, Minor Hollowell of Memphis, Tennessee and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He had five sisters and three brothers who preceded him in death, Maggie Lois Bankhead, Willie Jackson, Mary Bullard, Robbie Lee Cooper, Alean Banks (deceased as an infant), George Banks and Ernest Howard Banks. Viewing willbe Friday, January 23 from 4-7 p.m. at N. J. Ford & Sons Funeral Home Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24 at Mt. Olive Cathedral CME Church.
