After the 1860 Union of Benefices Act, the way was clear for the demolition of many unused London churches and the reinterment in the new City of London cemetery, as planned by William Haywood (q.v.) of those buried in unused churchyards (many of which were required for the ongoing rebuilding of the City of London and the construction of the London underground railway). The Church of St. Mary Somerset and St. Mary Mounthaw was demolished in 1868.
