A number of documents point toward Stephen Maine Jr. (1782-1838) of Lenox being the son of Stephen Maine Jr. (1758-1839) of New Lebanon, Columbia Co., New York rather than the son of Paul Ray Maine. First, I would point out that Paul's wife, Asenath, would have been only 12 years old at Stephen's birth (1782). I'll quote some snippets from the elder Stephen Maine's probate documents linking him to the younger Stephen:

(1) "Advertisement. . . . The people of the state of New York . . . to all to whom these presents shall come or may concern, and especially to Polly B. the wife of Jonas Chapman junior, and Asenath L. wife of Thomas Wood, of Locke, Cayuga county, N. Y., Lucy Ann Maine and Stephen Van Rensselaer Maine, of Lenox, Madison county, N. Y. or thereabouts, to Electa the wife of James Reynolds, of some part of the state of Vermont, and Philander T. Maine and Ann Louise wife of Almon S. Harmon, of some part of the state of Michigan. The said several individuals constituting a portion of the next of kin and heirs at law of Stephen Maine, late of the town of New Lebanon in the county of Columbia, deceased, send greeting. . . ."

Note that Stephen Van Rensselaer Maine and Lucy Ann Maine were children of Stephen Maine Jr. of Lenox, as were Philander T. Maine and Ann Louise Maine , wife of Almon Harmon as demonstrated below.

(2) The last will and testament of Stephen Maine of the town of Lenox in the County of Madison. . . . I give and bequeath all my household furniture beds and bedding to my Loving wife Betsey and all my Stock and the interest of all my money while she remains my widow, the Principal to be used no faster than to support the two children Lucy Ann & Stephen Van Rensselaer; and all my property of every name and nature not already disposed of I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy Ann Maine and Stephen Van Rensselaer Maine to be equally divided between them. . . ."

Note that the preceding shows that Stephen Maine Jr. of New Lebanon had a son, Stephen, whom I believe was Stephen of Lenox based on the other quotes, who in turn had a son Stephen [Van Rensselaer] Maine of Lenox, the grandson and heir mentioned in the preceding.
