Abbott died 14 years later on Jan. 12, 1898 at the age of 53. His wife, Elizabeth, applied for a widow’s pension on Sept. 17, 1898 – a little more than nine months after her husband passed away (app. #682,713; cert. #537,644 - Indiana). One of John’s children, C.O. Abbott, also applied for a pension on May 3, 1920 (app. #1,157,073; cert. #957,478).
