Born in 1844 in Washington Co., IN, John Abbott enlisted in the 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861 from his home in Clark Co., IN. He was listed on his company’s muster roll as “sick” in a Louisville hospital as of Feb. 14, 1862. Abbott was discharged from federal service on Sept. 11, 1862 after serving just less than a year in the ranks of the Thirty-eighth. His official discharge certificate can be found in the collections of the John Hay Center in Salem, Washington Co., IN.

After the war, he became a member of Indiana G.A.R. Post #430 (William Johnson Post), located in Little York, Washington Co., IN. On Dec. 8, 1883, Abbott applied for a veteran’s invalid pension (app. #501,748; cert. #315,379 - Indiana).

Abbott died 14 years later on Jan. 12, 1898 at the age of 53. His wife, Elizabeth, applied for a widow’s pension on Sept. 17, 1898 – a little more than nine months after her husband passed away (app. #682,713; cert. #537,644 - Indiana). One of John’s children, C.O. Abbott, also applied for a pension on May 3, 1920 (app. #1,157,073; cert. #957,478).
