Americus, Ga., May 2 (Special) Patrick
Bass, one of the oldest and most highly
esteemed citizens of Americus, died today
after a long illness. He was once Sheriff
of Sumter county, and one of the few
survivors of that office.
Patrick Bass owned a farm 3 miles from Leslie. He gave 5 adjoining acres to build the Mount Zion Methodist Church and Cemetery. He served as Sergeant with his four brothers in Cutts Artillery, C.S.A.. He was elected Sheriff of Sumter Co and served one term, 1886-1887. He refused to run for re-election because of his reluctance to hang a condemned man. Most of Patrick and Eliza's 9 children reared families in Sumter Co and descendants still live in Leslie, DeSoto and Americus.
