Robert Elder was born in 1679 at Eldersile, near Paisley Renfrewshire in lowland country about six miles from Glasgow, Scotland, and died Jul 28, 1746 in Paxtang Township, Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania around the age of 67.

He married Eleanor Gillespie in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1703. She was born in 1684 in Edinburgh or Angus County, Scotland and died Oct 25, 1742 in Paxtang Township, Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania around the age of 58. She was buried at Paxtang.

After their marriage, Robert and Eleanor emigrated from Scotland to Lough Neagh, County Antrim, Ulster Province, Ireland. Their five sons and daughter were born there. In 1727, Robert and Eleanor and the three youngest of their children, David, James, and Ann, came to America and settled on a tract of land near the first ridge of the Kittochtinny Mountains, five miles north of present-day Harrisburg in Paxtang Township, Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, Pennsylvania. Their three oldest children, with their wives, came to America in 1733.

Robert was buried in an unmarked grave in the old Paxtang Presbyterian Church graveyard where his son John ministered for many years.

i Robert, b. 1704, m. Elizabeth Tomson on Jun 25, 1759, d. 1807
ii John, b. Jan 26, 1706, m. 1st, Mary Baker on Aug 13, 1740; 2nd, Mary Simpson on Nov 5, 1751, d. Jul 17, 1792. He was the famous "fighting parson" of the French and Indian Wars.
iii Thomas, b. 1708, m. Elizabeth Mary Patterson, d. Aug 3, 1752
iv David, b. 1710, m. Hannah Anderson in 1730, d. 1753 or 1765
*v James, b. 1712, m. 1st, -- Cole; 2nd, Elizabeth Maips on Mar 5, 1759, d. Sep 13, 1818
vi Ann, b. 1713, m. John Anderson
