DEATH OF AN HONORED CITIZEN
Rev. Abel Johnson, who has been a highly esteemed citizen of this county for more than forty years, died at his home in Liberty Center, last Thursday morning, at the advanced age of seventy-seven years. The funeral occurred Friday, at the Liberty Center Baptist church of which he has been a pastor and member for a great number of years.
The services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Porter, of Anderson, and Rev. Charles Winans, the present pastor of the church. The funeral was largely attended.
The deceased was confined to the house but a short time before his death, although he has been in feeble health for sometime.
Elder Johnson was a true Christian, a worthy church counsellor and an honest patriot, and the church and county have lost one of their best advisors and most respected citizens.

Obituary published in the Bluffton Chronicle; Bluffton, Indiana; April 23, 1891
Rev. Abel Johnson was born in Harrison Co., Ohio, Feb. 6, 1814. He removed with his parents to Muskingum county at the age of ten years. He was left an orphan at the age of eleven, entirely dependent on his own energy and skill for support. He united with the Adams Baptist church at the age of sixteen, and at once became an active and efficient member.
He was licensed to preach the Gospel at the age of nineteen, and ordained to the full work of the Gospel ministry at Taylorville, Ohio in the year 1841. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Smith, April 2, 1835, in Muskingum county, Ohio. The fruit of this union was eleven children, nine boys and two girls. Four sons and one daughter preceded him to the eternal home. Five sons and one daughter with their mother survive to mourn their loss. He had five sons who responded to the call of their country in the dark hour of national peril. Two of whom laid down their lives as sacrifices on the altar of their country.
He removed to Indiana in 1850 and settled in Huntington county, where he remained until the spring of 1853, when he moved to Wells county and settled on his farm one mile south of Liberty Center. Here he remained, laboring on the farm during the week and preaching on the Lord's day until the spring of 1884, when, on account of feeble health, he retired from active labor and moved to the village of Liberty Center.
The First Baptist church of Liberty Center, Indiana, was organized by him in the summer of 1855, of which he became a constituent member. He served the church as pastor for thirteen consecutive years. The church which he loved so much and for which he labored so earnestly and faithfully remains a vigorous monument to his life and labor.
During the half century of his ministerial life he served the following churches as pastor: - Liberty Center, Bluffton, Muncie, Huntington, Hartford City, Granville, West Union, Markle, Dunkirk, Pleasant Mills, Canon and Ebenezer, besides a number of churches in Ohio.
Elder Johnson, in his day, was the leading minister in Northern Indiana. He departed this life April 9, 1891, aged 77 years, 2 months, and 3 days.
The funeral occurred from the Liberty Center Baptist church April 10, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. J. W. Winans, in the presence of an immense throng of friends and neighbors. The funeral discourse was based on Mal. 2:6, and was a review of his life and labor for the Master.
