Witnesses to his birth were William PETRJ (PETRI) and wife. At age 17 he accompanied his parents in their move from New Jersey to New York. In November of 1813, at age 28, William enlisted in the New York Militia at Ovid, NY. This was the War of 1812 and he substituted for a Mr. STILWELL. His two sons, Isaac and Andrew confirm this in "The History of Kent Co." by Crawford, when they relate how their father fought under General Scott at Fort Erie, Black River and Lundys Lane. He was honorably discharged at Batavia, NY on 20 Nov 1814. On 5 Dec 1850 William applied for bounty land of 160 acres. At this time he and his family were living at New London, Huron Co., OH. On 28 Aug 1871 he applied for a soldier's pension at Cascade, Kent Co., MI. He states in his military records that he was married to Betsey ALLEN after the close of the War of 1812. She would have been 12 years old at the end of the war. Bible records held by FENTON descendants in Seneca Co. say William was married to a "Miss OWEN" so he might have been married earlier to a wife who died young. Other bits of information and land deeds indicate this would have been Sarah "Sally" OWENS. He and his family came to Huron Co., OH between 1835-37 from PA. Moved to Kent Co., MI in 1852. Originally buried in Cook Cemetery which was moved to the SE corner of the Cascade Cemetery when Interstate 96 highway was built. (See picture of Cook Cemetery stone.)
