Robert was the third of seven children born to Richard L. and Laura Jane (Moose) Poplin. He married (1) Bessie Harwell and they had eight children: Dillard Grier, Dempsey Boger, Lloyd Lenior, Jenett, J.Hue, Richard, Branson and (Infant Daughter). He later married (2) Mildred Harwell.
