He died at home in Mableton, Georgia, where he lived for over 47 years with his wife, Novis C. Gazaway of almost 53 years (March 8, 1956). He had six children, David, Deborah, Dana, Douglas, Dawn and Dianne. (better known as the 6 D's). He has 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He worked for Delta Air Lines, Inc. for 30 years. Was a Airman First Class in the United States Air Force. He loved to fish, hunt, all sports and Nascar racing. He was a very big Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan.
