His siblings were Lilly, Mack, Mary Elizabeth, and Nocy Ann. He also had two half-siblings, Nettie Ann Dixon and Tillman David Dixon.
On February 6, 1899, at the age of 27, Richard married Rena Fussell in Conroe, Texas.
On February 11, 1901, Rena, 19 years of age, died during the birth of their son, William Walter Winters.
Unable to care for a newborn on his own, Richard's brother-in-law, Calvin (Rena's brother), and wife, Cora, raised William from birth to 18 years of age.
On December 27, 1904, Richard married Addie Aldridge. To this union, six children were born. Addie and Richard named one of their daughters, Rena, after his late wife.
His first son, William, remained with Calvin and Cora but Richard, Addie, and William's siblings maintained a very close and loving relationship with him.
Over the years, Richard worked in farming, logging, railroad, and oil industries in Montgomery, Matagorda, and Tyler Counties.
On March 13, 1935 at the age of 62, Richard was killed in an accident while working in the oil fields near Conroe.
He was laid to rest in Conroe Memorial Park in Montgomery, County. According to a Find-a-Grave volunteer who graciously looked for Richard's grave, he indicated that there is no headstone at this time.
