Abel Jones was the son of Moses Jones and Dorothy Dyer. He was born in Braintree, Massachsetts. He married Louisanna Sage. In 1786 they were in Elba, Genesee, New York. By 1810 the couple had moved to Middlefield, Otsego County.

Abel was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He named his daughter Lafayette after General Lafayette.
