WWII Army veteran; former controller; band trumpeter

CHATHAM, MASSACHUSETTS

Donald H Colby, 73, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. Son of the late Gordon Leonard Colby and Dorothy Freida (Gans) Colby. He was the husband of Jane (Campion) Colby for almost 45 years.

Born in Cambridge, Mr. Colby was raised in Dedham and served in the Army during World War II. After his military service, he attended Boston University's School of Music and graduated from Bentley College.

Mr. Colby was a manager of cost accounting and controller of several New England manufacturing companies. He summered on the Cape as a child and adult, moving to the Cape permanently in 1982 from Windham, Conn. He was associated with the May Institute in Chatham until 1988.

His hobbies included bird carving, painting and sailing. He loved music, especially that of the big band era, and played trumpet with The Dreamers, The Silver Foxes, Vintage Sounds and the Brewster-Harwich and Chatham town bands.

Mr. Colby was very active in the Coast Guard Auxillary. He held many leadership positions at both flotilla and division levels, including flotilla commander and staff officer for public affairs, operations and aids to navigate. His outstanding service record resulted in many commendations and medals.

In the Army, he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal of Germany.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his mother, Dorothy Colby of Spring Hill, Fla; three sons, Peter Colby of Durham, N.C., Christopher Colby of North Kingstown, R.I., and David Colby of Bellingham, a daughter, Elaine C Holt of Hampton, VA.; two half-sisters, Donna Mae (Colby) Leite and Deborah Maureen Colby, both of Rhode Island; three half-brothers, Ronald Lees Colby and Richard Allen Colby, both of Rhode Island, and David Leonard Colby of Germantown, TN.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by his father, half sister Beverly Ann (Colby) Moody and half brother Bruce Adams Colby, Sr.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 678 Main Street, Harwich. Burial is private.
