Abraham was a son of Christopher Lance and Sarah Johnson. He married (1) in 1809, Elizabeth (1789-1827), a daughter of George Halliwill, Sr and Nancy Ann Kirby.

Fellow family researchers claim that Elizabeth was anxious to introduce the newest addition of her family, Abraham Jr. Therefore Abraham Sr. and Elizabeth, along with their children, packed the wagon for a long journey to Jefferson County, Ohio. They stayed several days with Abraham's brother and sister-in-law Peter and Polly. Tragedy stuck the Lance family as they where returning to their home in Wayne County, as Elizabeth suddenly became ill and died. It is unclear as to the exact location of her death, but sources report that she was buried at a farm fence corner. Elizabeth's sister, Nancy Ann Houtz, cared for Abraham, Jr.

After a mourning period, Abram married (2) 15 Mar 1832 Mary "Polly" McCormick (1795-1863). Soon after, little Abraham was reunited with his father and his new bride. She was laid to rest at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Doylestown, Ohio.
