James Preston White was born September 28, 1929 in Splinter Hill, Alabama, he was the son of Frederic William White, Sr and Amy Catherine (Folmar) White. Preston married Barbara Rebecca (Griffin) White.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1946. After serving honorably for 20 years, Preston was transferred from active duty to Fleet Reserve on February 06, 1967, and Retired June 01, 1977.

Achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer Engineman, Preston received Four (4) Good Conduct Medals, the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He entered The Imperial Domain of the Golden Dragon on July 12, 1949 and The Golden Shellback's, however the certificate & date has been lost. On August 16, 1963 he received a Letter of Commendation for the rescue of two shipyard employees who had lost consciousness while painting in confined spaces.
