Peter was the ninth of ten children born to William and Elizabeth Gourley Anderson in Glasgow, Scotland. When he was two years old, his parents were converted to the LDS (Mormon) Church. The family immigrated to America in 1849 and stayed in St. Louis, Missouri for over three years until they could earn enough money for the rest of the journey. They crossed the plains to Utah in 1853.

Peter became one of the early settlers in the vicinity of Lander, Wyoming. In the 1870 census he was a miner at Hamilton City (Miner's Delight), near South Pass, Wyo. In 1882 Peter married Laura Nicol or Necol, a schoolteacher. They had seven children. The old Anderson Homestead was in the vicinity of South pass, near Atlantic City. In the 1900 census in Lander, Peter's occupation was listed as "capitalist".
