Son of John and Agnes King Anderson. William had a twin brother, Peter, and eight more siblings.

William married Elizabeth Gourley in 1823 in Glasgow, Scotland, and they had ten children. On the birth records of his children, William's occupation was listed as "dresser" (one who finishes cloth to give it a smooth nap). In the 1841 census the family was living in Barony parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, on London Road, but William was away, working elsewhere temporarily. The census shows his wife Elizabeth Anderson, 35, daughter Margaret, 15, occupation "power loom weaver", son William, 12, John, 10, James, 8, Archibald, 5, Hellen, 3, and Elizabeth, one month old. They would have two more children after 1841: Peter in 1844, and another John in 1847.

Their family joined the LDS Church in 1847 in Glasgow. Their eldest daughter Margaret was the first to emigrate to America, in 1848. William, Elizabeth, and the remainder of their children emigrated in 1849, on the ship "Zetland". They stayed in New Orleans for five months then in St. Louis for 4 years, saving up money for the rest of the journey. The 1850 census shows them in the 6th Ward of St. Louis, Missouri. William, 52, was listed as a "laborer", his wife Elizabeth was age 50, son James, 17, son Archibald, 15, daughter Ellen, 11, daughter Elizabeth, 9, and son Peter, 5. His eldest daughter Margaret was also in St. Louis, but wasn't found in this census. William and his daughter Margaret crossed the plains to Utah in 1852, with the Huntington-Johnson company. The rest of the Anderson family followed in 1853, in the Moses Clawson company. William and Elizabeth Gourley Anderson settled in Salt Lake City, but some of their children moved to Spanish Fork, Wanship, and North Ogden (Utah) and Lander (Wyoming).
