Many town buildings at the town of Marmaton (just west of Fort Scott) were burned by Rebel guerrillas on that date. Catherine, a widow was age 33 and children Henry, age 11; Caroline, age 9 and Frederick, age 7 on October 22, 1864. This was during the Civil war and this incident was called the Marmaton Massacre as at least 6 men from that town were murdered by Rebel guerrillas.
