On September 7, 1858, after a trip to Eucheeanna, Florida to buy supplies and sell a parcel of land, Samuel was murdered at the home of Mrs. Nancy Sutley, where he had stopped for water about 10 miles from Eucheeanna, by his traveling companion and neighbor in southwestern Holmes County, John Ammons. Ammons was tried for the crime in Jackson County and again in Calhoun County, FL. Ammons, age 23, pleaded self defense, but admitted to Mrs. Sutley "immediately afterwards that he had killed him by striking him with a gun, which was broken in the process, and with his knife." The body bore knife wounds across the shoulders, neck and upper chest. His purse was never found with the money from the land sale. Ammons was hanged by the Holmes County sheriff in early 1862 as ordered by the Supreme Court of Florida in 1861.
