OBITUARIES (Saturday and Sunday)
Funeral services for Private William Whitford will be held at Marshall & Harper's chapel Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Edgar D. Salkeld, pastor of the First Christian church. Services will be under the auspices of the American Legion.
Private Whitford was killed in action in the Battle of the Argonne on November 5, 1918, and was 24 years old.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. M.J. Young, of 711 S. Shartel avenue, three brothers and four sisters, all of Oklahoma City. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.

The Battle of the Argonne Forest, also known as the Meuss-Argonne offensive, was the last major campaign of World War I, from September 26 to November 11, 1918 (the armistice). The American and French troops forced the Germans to retreat, and with the collapse of the Hindenburg Line, the Germans sued for peace.

William Whitford answered the draft call in Paris, Lamar Co., Texas. He gave his age as 23, and his birth date as December 4th 1894. He was born in Paris, Texas. At the time of his draft registration he was traveling and working as a laborer with The Great Patterson Shows (Circus). He was killed in France and in 1921 his remains were returned for burial in Section 1, Lot 14, Center Front at Rose Hill Burial Park.
