Mrs. Maxine V. Krause, 90 of Avon Lake, Ohio, formerly of Vallejo, and Port Arthur, Texas, passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at 7:50 a.m. in St. John Lakeshore Hospital.
Mrs. Krause was born April 19, 1918 in Masontown, W.Va., a daughter of Robert and Laura Ann Oxier Watterson. She attended schools in Masontown, Riverside and San Francisco, Calif., graduating from the State Teachers College in Conway, Ark., for her future career in Army Administration. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII, she served with the Fourth Air Force in San Francisco, and the Adjugdent General's Office. Later, she served at Ft. Nix, New Jersey, joining the WAC's and was trained in Tidworth, England, where she was instructed to be an Armed Service Telephone Operator, where she remained until 'D DAY.' She then was transferred to Paris, and was present for the Liberation of France, obtaining the rank of corporal.
Mr. and Mrs. Krause were world travelers. Maxine had been associated as the bookkeeper for the Dr. Pepper family owned franchise in California. A sports enthusiast, she was competitive in golf, claiming the Vallejo Golf Championship, competing in several tournaments in the Bay Area. She also enjoyed bowling, fishing, mountain climbing and painting.
Her husband, Herb Krause, whom she married in 1948, preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Edith Watterson, of Westlake, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral and entombment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Skyview Memorial Lawn, 200 Rollingwood Drive, Vallejo, where friends may call for 1/2-hour prior to the services.
Maxine requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the National WWII Memorial, Processing Center, P.O. Box 186, Calverton, NY 11933.
