John was the oldest child of Frederick Parrott and Barbara Edwards.
Due to his responsibilities as a husband, father of several small children and 'oldest son' John had to stay and care for his and his father's farms, while his brothers were away fighting in the Revolutionary War. After several of his brothers returned from service for John had his turn to sign up to serve.

After several months of serving, he received word of the illness of his wife Cathrina and had to return home to care for her and his children. After returning home Catherina passed away leaving John to care for his small children and their farm. He later remarried to Louisa Bean and is said to have returned to complete his service in the Military.

In 1783 John and Louisa along with several other families moved from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to Green County, North Carolina which later became Cocke County, Tennessee.

Children of John and Catharina Meyers-Parrott:
Elizabeth 'Polly' Parrott 1766-,
Mary Parrott 1768-,
Henry Parrott 1772-1853,
John 'Smoking-Johnny' Parrott 1773-1852,
Barbara 'Barbary' Parrott 1774-1819,
Susanna Parrott 1776-,
George Parrott 1776-1861.

These children were named (in the order above) as legatees in a Power of Attorney as heirs in the will of Henry Meyer of Virginia thought to be the father of Catherina John's deceased first wife.

After returning from the War John and Louisa began to have additional children;
Rachel Parrott 1781-1838,
Bethany Parrott 1782-1864,
John Parrott 1785-,
Jacob Parrott 1792-,
Catherine Bean Parrott 1796-1864.

John is considered to be the founder of Parrottsville since he was said to have been the first settler to build a home in the area. He was also said to have served in about 1785 as the Justice of the Peace in the area where they had settled.
