Kay was the sixth of seven children born to Elizabeth Halferty and Sam Patterson. She married Albert DeFranciso in 1960 and they had two sons before the marriage ended in divorce. Kay then married Glen Cooke and had one son before that marriage ended in divorce. In 1971, she married Danny Montano and they had a daughter before divorcing. Kay returned to her maiden name after that divorce.
