VIRDEN - George C. Howarth, 84 of Virden passed away Monday Feb. 23, 2009, at Sunrise Manor in Virden.
George was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Auburn Twp, IL, a son of George J. and Hallie (Wyman) Howarth. He married Elena L. Uchtman-Jones July 27, 1963 in Thayer, IL.
George was an Army veteran serving during WW II; he retired from Pillsbury Mills in Springfield, IL as a master machine repairman and was a member of the Virden American Legion Post 386, Virden, IL.
George is survived by his wife, Elena Howarth of Virden; sons, George C. (Melissa) Howarth Jr. and Ned F. (Sonja) Jones, both of Virden, James E. and William E. (Lorna) Jones, both of Hillsboro; daughters, Rachel L. Cornwell of Virden, Jane Jones of Chatham, Alice (Michael) Hayes, of Pleasant Plains and Carol S. Stout of Springfield; sister, June Murphy of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding in death were his parents; a daughter, Martha E. Jones; a brother, John Howarth; and a sister, Zennada Cornwell.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 26, 2009, at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Virden, and one hour to services at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Girard, IL. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, IL. Please sign the guest book at calvert-ferryfuneralhomes.com.
