Arabella lived near the Missouri River with her parents and seven siblings.
Arabella recalls that when a small child playing with a little Indian girl, whose mother had was employed by Joseph to make maple sugar, she had a scare from a couple of strange Indians. There had been rumurs of hostile Indians being in the neighborhood and the Indian woman kept a sharp outlook while attending to the task of keeping the kettles boiling. She heard a noise of someone traveling.
The Indian woman hid the white child and the Indian child, each under a large sugar bucket and cautioned them not to make a sound. Presently two strange Indians came by, looked about, tried to talk to the Indian woman and went on their way.
Arabella was married to William Vaughan with whom she had 10 children, William, Joseph, Nancy, Serina, Mary, James, Minerva, Jehoida, Mariah and Sarah Vaughan.
