A Civil War veteran, the military data printed in his obituary shown here is largely incorrect. He actually enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 22, 1864, as a private with Independent Battery C Pennsylvania Light Artillery. On January 12, 1865, he was among those transferred to Battery M, 5th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (204th Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery June 30, 1865.

" Death of Jacob Shoemaker"
" Jacob Shoemaker died at his home on East Front Street, this borough, on Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock, aged 71 years, 8 months and 15 days. Death followed an illness of about 11 months, during the greater part of which time Mr. Shoemaker was confined to bed and suffered excruciating pain. He was born at Brunnerville and was a son of the late Peter Shoemaker. Mr. Shoemaker was a laborer by occupation. He also was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted as a private in Co. M 5th regiment Pennsylvania heavy artillery on August 22. 1864 and served until June 13, 1865, although he was not engaged in any battles. He was a member of the Stevens Post No. 616 G.A.R. for a number of years. In 1868 he was united in marriage to Anna Shearp. The couple resided in Warwick for the past 24 years. Deceased was a member of the local United Brethren church. Besides his wife one son Henry Shoemaker of Hopeland, survives. Three brothers also survive namely; Frederick of Canton. O. ; Anderson of Brunnerville and James of this place. The funeral will be held on Sunday morning with services in the local U.B. church at 9 o'clock, to be conducted by Rev. S. G. Hess. Then the funeral cortege will proceed to the Hopeland U.B. Church where services will be held at 10:30 A.M. conducted by Rev. Shoop. Internment will be in the adjoining cemetery."
