Gus Soefje was born near New Braunfels in Neighborsville, Texas, January 26, 1858 and died in the Luling Hospital October 7, 1938 at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 11 days.
He came to Leesville in 1884 and was married to Miss Bertha Behrendt on the 6th of February in 1886. To this union were born ten children of which four preceded their father in death. Those living are Miss Hulda Soefje, Louis Soefje, Willie Soefje, Dono Soefje, and Mrs. Hilda Keith all of Leesville and Mrs Martha Ullrich of Kingsburg.
Mr. Soefje is also survived by four grandchildren and five bothers: Herman Soefje of Belmont, Ernest, Albert and Gotlieb Soefje of New Braunfels, Henry Soefje of Ottine; one sister, Mrs Emma Kohlenberg of New Braunfels.
Mr. Soefje became ill on November 13, 1936 and was confined to his bed practically ever since. He had many friends who will be grieved at his passing and deeply sympathize with his companion and children in their loss. Mr. Soefje was confirmed by Re. Kuepfer at New Braunfels.
Funeral services were conducted in the home Friday, Oct. 7 at 3:30 p. m. with Rev. W. Wolf officiating. Two old familiar hymns were sung at the home, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul."
Committal was in the Leesville Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Gilbert Soefje, Milton Soefje, James Soefje, George Soefje, Herbert Behrendt, and Hugo Shubert.
Gustav "Gus" SOEFJE was a son of Heinrich "Hy" "Henry" SOEFJE and Anna (WILLMANN/WELLMAN) SOEFJE, both of Germany.
He was married to Bertha (BEHRENDT) SOEFJE.
They were married February 6, 1886 in Comal County, Texas.
He was a resident of Leesville, Gonzales County, Texas.
