Jessamine was the daughter of Dr. Thomas J. McFarland and Carolyn Pauline Jayne. She married Franklin Potter Penfield. She graduated in 1897 from Sam Houston Institute of Teaching which is now Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. She was a published writer, an artist, pianist, well read in the classics, brilliant in many subjects, and active in various clubs. It was said that Jessamine could read music better than anyone ever known.
On Feb. 24, 1904 she married Franklin Potter Penfield, (son of Charles Seymour Penfield and Susan Adela Potter). They had two beautiful daughters:
*Carolyne Jayne Penfield (1907-1980)
*Elsie Penfield (1908-1981)
