A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Lebanon County October 23, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 2 as a private with Co. I, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to sergeant, and honorably discharged with his company August 17, 1863. He is in the company register as "Carl," but his brother Nathaniel, a veteran of the 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, spelled his surname "Corl."
Cause of his death reportedly was blood poisoning. His obituary in the Lancaster Intelligencer presumed it was "from a wound received during the war," questionable given that the 173rd Pennsylvania never engaged in combat and reported no battle casualties. He had been a member of Steelton's Lascomb Post No., 351, G.A.R.
