He united the Salem Baptist Church pastored by Rev. Joe Williams. He met and married Catherine Cannon in 1953 to this union eight children were born. The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1971, where Whitfield worked as a Porter at the Dunes Hotel until his retirement.
