Thomas was a Farmer & Innkeeper. In an age when self-sufficiency was recognised, Thomas would often apply his acknowledged skills for healing & first aid; on one occasion his youngest daughter, Judith, had gashed her hand open and ran to her father for help. Thomas sterilised a needle & several strands of her long hair in boiling water, then proceeded to successfully stitch the wound closed...
Two of his sons were killed in mining accidents, Philip, 24, in 1898 at No 2 Whitworth Colliery, Tom at No 9 Colliery.
A charismatic & strong-willed character, Thomas died aged 63, in 1909 at the Mountain Air Inn, Nantybwch. He is buried with Hannah and several sons in the Samuel family plot in Dukestown Cemetery, Nantybwch, Tredegar.
