He was with Hill's Corps; Anderson's Division; Wilcox's Brigade at the Gettysburg campaign. Company F was known as the "Coosa Valley Guards" Confederate *CMSR's report him enlisting on June 4, 1861 at Cropwell, Alabama (located in St. Clair County) for the duration of the War and mention him as being absent without leave on June 30, 1863 and listed his name as Thomas Lancastro. Federal POW records list him as being a prisoner during the Gettysburg campaign and report him as being desirous of joining Union Army and being transferred to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry at Fort Delaware and of having special orders from Secretary of War; Edwin M. Stanton for allowing former Confederates to join the Federal Army and told Union authorities he had volunteered for the Confederate service and had been born in Mississippi. (Note: Federal POW records report his capture at Fairfield, Pennsylvania on July 5, 1863) 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's list him as being originally with Company G and enlisting on September 18th and mustered into service on September 24, 1863 at age 27 and listed his physical description as blue eyes; light hair; fair complexion; 6' 1" in height and told 3rd Maryland Cavalry authorities he had been born in Winston County, Mississippi and had been a farmer prior to the War and made his signature with a X and listed his name as Thomas Lancaster. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as being promoted to Corporal on December 10, 1863. According to Company muster roll history Company G 3rd Maryland Cavalry started embarking on the steamer from Camp Schenck near Baltimore, Maryland on January 3, 1864 and set sail on the steamer "Empire City" on January 6, 1864 for New Orleans, Louisiana and arrived on January 16, 1864. Records also state that there was one case of small pox on board and that the company also lost eight horses while at sea. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as deserting on February 13, 1864 at Madisonville, Louisiana. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him returning from desertion on May 5, 1865 due to the President's Proclamation issued on March 11, 1865. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him being transferred to Company H since Company G no longer existed due to the consolidation of the regiment to battalion strength on December 9, 1864. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him being discharged with his regiment on September 5, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. (Note: According to the History and roster of Maryland Volunteers, War 1861-5 prepared by under the authority of the General Assembly of Maryland his name is carried in the roster of Company G and listed as being transferred to Company H and listed as listed as deserting on September 5, 1865) (Note: this obviously was in error according to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's)
A notation was made by the War Department concerning his service record "Record and Pension Office, War Department, Washington, November 24, 1894 - This man deserted February 13, 1864, but as he returned to the service May 10, 1865 under the President's Proclamation dated March 11, 1865, and appears to have complied with the conditions thereof, the charge of desertion no longer stands against him. The record of the fact that he was absent in desertion from February 13, 1864 to May 10, 1865, cannot, however, be expunged." Thomas Lancaster filed for a Federal pension on November 13, 1891 and used Company G 3rd Maryland Cavalry as his unit. His widow also filed for a pension on August 8, 1914. Pension records indicate that he died on June 30, 1914 at Huntsville, Alabama. Find A Grave Memorial# 34783194 confirms his date of death and list him as being buried at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama (located in Madison County) (Note: According to Alabama, Marriages, 1816-1957 Thomas Lancaster married Elizabeth T. Woodall on March 24, 1878 in Madison, Alabama [it is believed that her middle name was Tennessee and that Madison referred to Madison County, Alabama])
