Harrison's ancestry was Pennsylvania Dutch. Some descendants think there may be a Hessian connection but this has not been proven. Originally, the family's religious beliefs were Lutheran. Harrison's full name may have been William Henry Harrison Sloop.

Harrison married Mary Jane Dilsaver about 1853. They had a son, Almon, and a daughter, Eugenia Victoria (Johnson), who was born in 1856. Harrison and Mary Jane divorced around 1860.

Harrison married Sarah Duell around 1868 in Paris, Illinois. Their children were Beecher, Grant, Clifton, Bunyan, Ralph, Albert, Matilda, Lydia, Rachel, Ruth, Elton, and Elizabeth.

On May 7, 1878 Harrison, Sarah, and family joined a covered wagon train pulled by mules under wagonmaster Mike Riddle on the Oregon Trail. They arrived in Knappa, Oregon, the first part of September 1878.

Harrison was a school teacher. He served as Clatsop County Superintendent of Schools for several years.
