FIRE IN HIS FACE.
An Employe At the Foundry Wasn't Used to Oil Burning
Alex Henderson, a foundry man employed at Hanford's foundry, was seriously burned about the neck and face yesterday afternoon at 4:30.
Mr. Hanford had recently put a steam donkey engine into his foundry and uses oil as fuel. Henderson was elected to manage the engine which he was capable of doing with the exception of using the oil. Mr. Hanford did not like to have him take charge of the engine but Henderson insisted.
The oil is forced through a pipe under the boiler by means of steam. Yesterday the steam was turned off so that there was not a sufficient amount to force the oil under the engine, and the blaze blew out through the fire door. At that moment Henderson had his face close to the door and was endeavoring to regulate the steam. The flames peeled the skin from his face. The injured man's face was covered with flour, and he was taken home in a buggy. If his eyes were not injured it is thought that he will be able to return to work within a few days.
"At any rate his pay will go right on just the same until he is able to return to work," said Mr. Hanford yesterday.
This morning, Mr. Henderson's attending physician thought that the sight of one eye may be destroyed.

BADLY BURNED BY THE FLASH
An Employee Meets With a Painful Accident at Hanford's Foundry.
Alex. Henderson, an employe in Hanford's foundry, was seriously burned about the face Friday evening by a flash of oil from the engine which he was working with in the foundry. The engine is the "donkey" recently installed there to work the blower connected with the furnace, and the fuel used is oil.
For some reason, when the oil was lighted Friday afternoon, it did not burn properly, and Henderson undertook to regulate it. In doing so it was necessary for him to look directly into the firebox, and while doing so the oil suddenly came down with a rush and the burning fluid flashed into his face, burning it terribly.
Not only his face, but his neck, and clear around to the back of his head was seared by the flame, while his eyebrows, eye lashes and most of his mustache were taken off entirely, and the hair on the front of his head was badly singed.
As quickly as possible Henderson was loaded into a vehicle and taken to his home on F street, about Seventh, and Dr. J. W. Aldridge summoned. He applied soothing lotions, and relieved the pain as much as possible, and then looked to the more serious part of the accident.
It was feared at first that the sight of the eyes would be damaged if not destroyed, but yesterday they did not seem to be seriously affected, and Dr. Aldridge thought last night that the chances were favorable to them coming out all right.

The Weekly Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 2, Oct. 13, 1899
A surprise party was arranged Friday evening, for Alex. Henderson on the recurrence of his birthday anniversary, at which music, games, a cake walk and refreshments filled in the time most enjoyably. Lottie listed herself as a widow, even though Aleck was still alive. (They were living apart.)

In abt. 1928, Alex 'went totally blind'. (His great-grandson, Dave Henderson, believes that it was from working in the mines. They used tungsten lamps working in the mines. It burns in a blinding white hot which will burn the retina like arc welding will.)

In the 1930 U.S. census, 64 yr. old widower, Alex Henderson (no occupation listed), b. abt 1866 in CA., was living in Bishop, Inyo, CA. with his
42 son (head of household), Arthur R. Henderson, a medical chiropractor, b. in CA.

FOUR BROTHERS, ALL OVER 80 YEARS OF AGE, GUESTS AT HIGHLAND PARTY
HIGHLAND, Oct. 10 - A family dinner was given Friday evening at the home of Dr. A. R. Henderson on South Palm avenue for his father, Alex Henderson in observance of his eighty-fifth birthday.
The dinner was unusual in that four brothers were present for the birthday celebration, all of them over 80 years old - Alex Henderson, 85; David Henderson, 87, both of Highland; William Henderson of Fontana, 83, and Walter Henderson of Etiwanda, 81. All of the four brothers were born in San Bernardino, the eldest four children in a family of nine. Their parents came to that city in 1852.
Dr. Henderson's daughter, Mrs. Roy Rule, was hostess for the dinner which was climaxed with a beautiful birthday cake topped with 21 candles. There were many birthday gifts for the honoree. Covers were laid for Alex, David and William Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rule and Dr. Henderson.
S. B. Pioneers
Alex Henderson and son, Dr. Henderson, were both associated with early San Bernardino. The father owned a foundry business and was a member of the fire department in the early days of the city and Dr. Henderson reminisces back to the time when as a small boy he was a Sun carrier.
Alex Henderson, while he has enjoyed much in life, has been totally blind for the past 22 years. During that time he has made his home with Dr. Henderson the past 16 years of which have been in Highland where they now reside. Naturally he does not get far from home but he is said to be happy, cheerful and with an optimistic and fine philosophy of life.

From a 1951 Family Clipping
Four Brothers, Octagenarians, Mark Birthday
Four brothers, all of whom were born in San Bernardino more than 80 years ago, enjoyed an interesting birthday event when Alex Henderson celebrated his eight-sixth natal anniversary Saturday, Oct. 6. The old family home was at Ninth and I streets.
Mr. Henderson's brothers are David of Highland, who is 88; William of Fontana, 84; and Walter of Etiwanda, 82. They are the sons of the late David Henderson, who came to San Bernardino valley in 1852.
They enjoyed a "kid's party" at the home of Dr. A. R. Henderson, son of Alex Henderson, and his wife in Highland. Old-fashioned favors were presented the guests, including hats, bells, and lollipops, and typical birthday party refreshments were served.
Sharing the festivities with the four brothers were Mrs. Walter Henderson of Etiwanda, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Henderson of Downey, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Henderson, Mrs. and Mrs. Donald Henderson and children of Luring Pines, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rice of Highland.

Dr. and Mrs. A.R. Henderson were hosts at a delightful party given at their home on South Palm Avenue Sunday afternoon honoring Dr. Henderson's father, Alex Henderson, in observance of his 87th birthday. It was in the nature of a family reunion and was unusual and outstanding in that four brothers were together, all over 80 years old. They were the honoree, Alex Henderson, 87, whose home is with Dr. and Mrs. Henderson; David Henderson, 89, of San Bernardino; William Henderson, 85, of Fontana; and Walter Henderson, 83, of Etiwanda. The four brothers have a sister, Mrs. Ed Perdew, 81, who lives at Alta Loma, who was unable to be present. It was interesting to note that all of the four brothers were born in San Bernardino and they and the younger generations grew up in and around this valley.
Father Henderson received greetings, gifts and cards. Mrs. Henderson served ice cream, cake and punch. There was a beautifully decorated birthday cake with yellow roses and green leaves and topped with three yellow candles, standing for health, wealth and happiness.
Alex Henderson is totally blind, having been without his sight for 25 years, but he is a happy and contented member of the Henderson family and keeps interested and busy the greater part of each day. Besides the four brothers, there were present at the family party Mrs. Walter Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Henderson of Luring Pines, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Henderson of Downey, Roy Henderson of Long Beach, Roy Rule of Highland and the hosts, Dr. and Mrs. Henderson.

Pioneers Greet New member
Alec Henderson was initiated into the San Bernardino Pioneer Society recently in the home of his son, Dr. Arthur Henderson, of Highland.
The new member is 90 years of age, the oldest of four surviving members of the family, descendants of early covered wagon pioneers of San Bernardino.
Members of the society with birthdays in the month of May were honored during a covered dish dinner served in the dining hall of the log cabin during the noon hour Saturday. Katherine Kenton and Sally Cox were co-chairmen of the dinner.
After the regular business session, a variety program was presented under the direction of Mrs. Iris McKown. C. C. Davies was entertainment chairman of the day.

Alex Henderson, father of Dr. A. R. Henderson of S. Palm Ave., suffered a fall a week ago while at the home of another son, Leslie E. Henderson at Luring Pines, which resulted in a broken hip. The injury is especially unfortunate in that the father is 90 years old and totally blind. He underwent surgery in which the hip was "pinned" and came through satisfactorily and reported to be in good spirits and maintaining cheerful and optimistic outlook.

It was feared at first that the sight of the eyes would be damaged if not destroyed, but yesterday they did not seem to be seriously affected, and Dr. Aldridge thought last night that the chances were favorable to them coming out all right.
