Mary McKee was the daughter of John McKee, Sr. and Jane Logan. Her mother was killed in the 1763 Shawnee Indian Raid on Kerrs Creek. The McKee family bible says Mary born on 11 Jun 1746 and died 3 Aug 1822, though her gravestone says the 2nd instead (The McKees of Virginia and Kentucky by George Wilson McKee, page 125). She married Hugh Weir.

The only known child I recorded was Margaret "Peggy" Weir, born 7 Sep 1782. Though the McKees of Virginia and Kentucky by George Wilson McKee (1842-1891), page 122 says in D. F. Laird's (undated) letter, that they had no children and they resided and died on Whistle Creek" where Mrs. Jacob Sibert now lives." Is it possible Peggy died early on? Whistle Creek, Rockbridge Co., Virginia is just north of Lexington, though not on the Findagrave list of towns. Also page 125 has a typed "Copy of Family Records," that states Hugh Weir died July 14, 1822, his wife Mary McKee Weir, died August 3, 1822.

There is confusion over the other Mary McKee, who married John Cunningham. She was the daughter of pioneer Robert McKee, the brother of Mary's father, John McKee. The Cunninghams, McKees and Weirs lived near each other, and signed documents between themselves.

Her father, John McKee's 1791 written will says: I give unto MARY WEIR, Miriam McKee, James McKee, Robert McKee, William McKee and David McKee, my DAUGHTERS and sons, to each of them twenty shillings, to be paid by my executors at the end of one year after my decease...

Oren F. Morton's A History of Rockbridge Co., VA, 1920, page 508 says McKEE: "4. John— bro. to 1 (Robert)— b. 1707, d. 1792, m. (1 ) Jane Logan, 1744. (2) Rosannah Cunningham, 1765— C: MARY (b. 1746, m. Hugh Weir), Miriam (b. 1747, d. 1796, m. William McKee, 1766), James L., Robert (m. Margaret Hamilton), William (m. Jane Kenady, 1790), David (m. Ann Dunlap, 1788), John."

Could this be the OTHER Mary Weir, also from the same county? Rockbridge Co., VA Will Book 5, p. 268. Know all men by these presents that I Mary Weir widow & relict of Andrew Weir deceased do by these presents declare that I will not take or accept the provision made for me by the will of my late husband sd Andrew Weir decd or any part thereof and I do hereby renounce all benefit which I might claim by said will now of record in the clerk's office of Rockbridge county court. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 30th day of September 1822. signed by Mary Weir."

Mary Wear's will was written on 24th Jul 1822 and probated on 8th Aug 1822, a few days after she passed. It was recorded by the clerk in Rockbridge Co., Virginia Will Book 5, p 240-241. It begins: In the name of God Amen, I MARY WEAR of Rockbridge County and state of Virginia being weak in body but of a sound mind do make this my last will and testament in manner an foarm following, to wit, FIrst I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the dust. Her gravestone is partially sunken (2010) and her "M. W." footstone (see 2nd photo) was resting on her husband's standing marker. Hers says:
MARY WEIR
August 2nd 1822
aged 76 years

Note: I didn't see her marker when I visited in the 1990's about 3 times, so it was either buried in the then tall grasses or flipped upside down. I was wary of the snakes there.
