Miriam McKee was the daughter of John McKee and Jane Logan McKee. She was born on 27 Sep 1747, according to the John McKee Bible.* She was about 16 years old when her mother was scalped by the Shawnee Indians in a raid on Kerrs Creek.

She married her first cousin Col. William McKee (17 May 1732 to 12 Oct 1816), the son of her uncle Robert McKee (D 11 Jun "1774" in Rockbridge Co.) and Agnes (unknown, died 29 Jan 1780 in Rockbridge Co., aged 84 years), on 20 May 1766, in Kerrs Creek, Rockbridge Co., Virginia.

In Virginia, they lived 3 miles west of Lexington, on the farm McKee sold to Dr. George Addison Baxter, the President of Washington College. Then they moved to Gilbert's Creek, then in Lincoln County, now in Gerrard Co., Kentucky, in about 1792. She died shortly afterwards, on 3 Oct 1796 or 1797.

William and Miriam had 13 known McKee children in Virginia:

John, 4 May 1767 - Oct 1818 (Mary Patton) IL
Nancy Agness 21 Sep 1768 - 1840 (Jas Wilson/Jno Houston) below

Following her death, William married second to the widow, Mrs. Joseph Daviess or Jennett Jean McKee (7 Apr 1746 -11 Nov 1806), on 19 Jan 1801, in Mercer Co., KY. She was also a cousin, the daughter of Dr. Robt Hamilton and Margaret McKee. Her husband Jos Daviess (Sr.), 4 Aug 1745 - 6 Sep 1795, in KY. (TN Genealogical Magazine Vol 47, #2, Sum 2000, Davis surname used).

Both the McKees of Virginia and Kentucky by George Wilson McKee, (D 1791) and the History of Woodford County, Kentucky by William Edward Raile, state that Miriam, the daughter of John McKee and Jane Logan married her first cousin, William McKee, the son of Robert (D abt 1766 in Rockbridge Co.) and Agnes McKee. The author was the great grandson of Col. Wm McKee of KY. "Mrs. Berry says her grandfather, William McKee, was the first sheriff of Rockbridge County and was about five years old" when he lost his mother, Jane Logan McKee. He was commissioned by Gov. Thos Nelson on 4 Sep 1781 (after its formation in 1778). It adds the "Logans were tall, sparely-built people, with black hair and eyes, and complexions inclined to sallowness. The McKees were tall, well proportioned people, with reddish, bushy hair, shaggy brows and small piercing blue of gray canny eyes." * Page 39 says the bible belonged to John T McKee's grandfather, who was John McKee (& Jane Logan McKee).

William served in the French and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War in Rockbridge Co., becoming a Colonel in 1785. He was a delegate for Rockbridge Co. and voted yes to ratify the U.S. Federal Constitution. The Zachariah Johnston Papers at the Library of Virginia hold copies of letters dated 6 Aug 1796, 24 and 27 Oct 1798, and 25 Jan 1799 from William of Lincoln Co., KY to Capt Zachariah Johnston (Johnston voted yes also to ratify the Constitution).

In 1774, he served with Col. Andrew Lewis at the Battle of Point Pleasant, WV. He attended the Augusta Academy (later W&LU) and In 1776, he served as one of their Trustees for then Washington College, now Washington and Lee University.

I also find William described as "middle size with a very long nose, and a sharp chin." (Historical Papers, Vol. 2 by the Washington and Lee University, He died in 1816, aged 84 in Garrard County (formerly part of Lincoln), KY, at unknown location. He had "the broadest Scotch accent."

Robert McKee, father of William, who was father of Samuel, departed this life, in Rockbridge Co., VA, 11 Jun "1766," aged 82. Grandmother Agnes McKee, wife of Robert, departed this life at the same place 29 Jan 1780 in the 80th year of her age. John McKee, mother's father, departed this life 2 Mar 1792 in the 84th year of his age. Wm McKee, father, departed this life 11 Oct 1816, aged 84. Miriam McKee, mother, departed this life, October 3d, 1796, in Lincoln Co., KY in the 50th year of her age. (I note when I took over this site, that Miram is listed as born in Garrard Co., KY instead, formerly part of Lincolnn). The McKees of VA and KY, by George Wilson McKee, died 1891, p 69, 119, plus.

Photo request for "Miram" (maybe on marker) was made in 2010. All other sources spell her name Miriam. Posibly no marker on site. The birth and death locations were listed when I received this site to maintain.

Gilberts Creek Traveling Church Cemetery on Rootsweb/Ancestry, contributed by Nancy Perry, undated, lists Mariam McKee, Wife of William McKee, 1747 - 3 Oct 1797, does not have a photo of her marker. Many do. In 1781, the Church was established on this site.
