Mrs. Arnette Sturla Canale of 620 South Belvedere, well-known worker in the Catholic Church and prominent Memphis socialite, died at 3:30 yesterday morning at her home. She was 64. Mass will be said at 10:30 tomorrow morning at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary with Spencer-Sturla Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Canale had been in ill health for a year. She was a lifelong Memphian. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sturla. Mr. Sturla was a prominent Memphis philanthropist. Her husband, George Canale, an attorney, died in 1930. Mrs. Canale was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was active in church work and had entertained many ecclesiastical dignitaries from throughout the United States. Only six weeks ago she entertained her lifelong friend, Samuel Cardinal Stritch, archbishop of the Chicago Diocese, who was here to dedicate new churches at Ripley and Covington, Tenn. She was graduated from St. Mary's Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind. Her brother, Frank J. Sturla, and Ed Spencer founded Spencer-Sturla Funeral Home in 1923. Both have died, and her son, John Ford Canale, is now president of the firm, and another son, George A. Canale, is vice president and treasurer. She also leaves three other sons, Sturla Canale, D.A. Canale, and Drew Canale, all of Memphis; a daughter, Mrs. Joseph L. Tagg Jr. of Memphis, and 21 grandchildren. Another son, William Taylor Canale, was killed in action while serving with the Army in France during World War II. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, on November 29, 1954)
