Mass for D.J. (Dee) Canale Sr, soldier, attorney, business man and oldest son of the oldest son of the founder of D. Canale & Co., Inc., will be said at 9:30 tomorrow morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary with Spencer-Sturla Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Canale died at 1:50 yesterday morning at Methodist Hospital, where he became a patient Thursday. He was 40. Formerly vice president of the Canale produce firm, he was associated with Continental Piston Ring Co. at the time of his death. He was separated from active duty with Army Ordnance only about four months ago. Commissioned a captain in September 1942, he ended his Army career with the rank of major. He was born in Memphis. After attending Christian Brothers College, the old Ford Kilvington Private School and the old Memphis University School, he earned a law degree at Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn. He practiced law for a time with the local firm of Sivley, Evans & McCadden. In the early '30s he served a term as representative in the State Legislature. His war service included duty at Aberdeen, Md. Proving Grounds and Anniston, Ala., Ordnance Works. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He lived at 459 North Willett. He was an ardent motor racing fan. This Spring he attended the auto races at Indianapolis, as he had for many years past. In his younger days he enjoyed participating in speed boat races on the Mississippi. He was the son of the late James L. (Jim) Canale, who was active in Shelby County politics. His grandfather was Dominic Canale. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Ruth White Canale, who he married in 1931; two sons, D.J. Canale Jr. and Jim Canale; and a sister, Mrs. Donald Kirke of Los Angeles.
