James L. Canale, 57, vice president of D. Canale & Co., one of the south's largest produce importing and wholesale firms, died from heart trouble at 11:12 o'clock last night at his home, 549 South Belvedere. He had been ill for two weeks. Mr. Canale was born in Memphis, the son of D. Canale, founder of the firm. He entered business with his father immediately after graduation from Christian brothers' College. The Southern Home Canning Company, a subsidiary of D. Canale & Co., was organized by Mr. Canale. Under his direction it manufactured and marketed many of the "Canale Brands." Mr. Canale was widely known as a sportsman. Speed boats on the Mississippi and hunting lodges scattered through Arkansas and Mississippi carried him constantly to the outdoors. On Poplar Pike, not far from Memphis, he maintained a summer home and hunting preserve and would often have his friends there for a week-end of shooting and horseshoe pitching. All the trophies won in the rifle contests, boat races and the like, brought not a tithe of the pleasure to him that the name of "the best horseshoe pitcher in Memphis" aroused. During the floods of last spring he led a fleet of pleasure boats in rescue and relief work on the lower Mississippi. For more than two months he was "the captain" commanding two boats of his own and those of other Memphians in the transport of supplies to Greenville and Vicksburg. Mr. Canale was a Roman Catholic and a member of practically every club in Memphis to which he was eligible. In 1900, he married Miss Jane Quigley of Memphis. A son, D.J. Canale, and one daughter, Vivian, now live in Memphis. Four brothers were associated with him in the family firm. They are Andrew Canale, president, and John, George and Tony Canale. Three sisters also survive. They are Mrs. J.W. Welsh, Mrs. August Hoffman and Mrs. R.F. Donovan, all of Memphis. Funeral arrangements in charge of Spencer-Sturla, have not been completed. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, on April 12, 1928)
