Joseph, born in Dover Township, was the youngest child of John and Mary (Van Mater) Polhemus. He married Freelove Wooley in about 1802 and fathered eight known children: Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Junian Sarah, Levi Wooley, Deborah, Rachel, John, and Joseph J.

His grandparents were Tobias and *(Emlay/Imlay), who, including their son John, were the parents of seven children. One of them, lifelong bachelor Nathaniel, must have favored Joseph over his other nephews and nieces, for in his will he left Joseph "all the plantation I now live on, house and barn, wagon and horses and gears, cattle and hogs, bed and bedding, tables together with all my household furniture, of every kind, and the bord tules, to the said Joseph, son of John Polhemus...."

"History and Genealogy - Polhemus - 1284 - 1954, Joseph lived out his life at an ocean side farm at Silverton, NJ. A three block street in Silverton that runs by the farm's location is named Polhemus Avenue.

Although "HIstory and Genealogy" states 1855 as the year of his death and the date on the tombstone support it, another source, I Heyward Peck in "The Rev. Johannes Theodorus Polhemus and Some of His Descendants" published in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, suggests that Joseph's son Nathaniel began administering Joseph's estate on 7 Sep 1857 by taking an inventory of his possessions. His widow, Freelove, passed away in 1857, so perhaps Nathaniel had not seen the need to conduct any death responsibilities while she was still alive.

*Research indicates that Parthenia Emlay/Imlay is his step-grandmother (Tobias' second wife).
