GRAVE FOUND UNDER THE COLONIAL CHURCH

Discovered September 15, 1901

Jamesa Millner, Esqr.
Attorney at Law
Ob. Dec. 9, 1772

Note: Nannie M. Gary, daughter of F. Sterling M. Gary. "I have always heard my father and others say that James Millner requested to be buried under the church so as to always be within hearing of the Gospel".

One of the most interesting people who lived in Halifax in the early days was one James Millner, an attorney, who appears to have been a native of Sussex County, Virginia. According to items regarding Millner published in the Virginia Gazette in Williamburg, he was elected to the North Carolina Assembly in the fall of 1772, and a great ball was held to celebrate the event.
Shortly thereafter he was thrown from his horse and died of a fractured skull.
The inventory of Millner's estate was a long one and lists a Library of over five hundred volumes which was certainly one of the largest ones in North Carolina at that time.
