Jacob "Jake" E. Karren, 62, died suddenly Sunday Morning while helping his brothers, Andrew, during lambing at his ranch in Meeker, Colorado. Mr. Karren had started to ride around the herd at 2:30 a.m. and had accompanied Charles Thompson until 7 a.m. when the men parted and planned to meet about noon in camp. When Mr. Karren failed to show up at noon a search was made and he was found dead, a short distance from his horse. He had ridden about 200 yards from where he left Mr. Thompson before he was stricken with a heart attack and died suddenly, it was reported. The body was taken to Meeker that afternoon and brought to Vernal Monday.
Mr. Karren had been working for his brother about a year. A month ago he injured his leg and had spent three weeks at his home in Naples recovering from the accident. Only a week before his death he had returned to the sheep camp to help with the spring rush of work.
Born at Vernal September 10, 1882, Jacob Edward Karren was a son of John D. and Alice Cox Karren. He attended county schools and was married July 24, 1906 to Maude Severson. He was a well-known resident of Naples where he has owned a farm there for many years.
Besides his widow, he is survived by three sons and two daughters, Lawrence and Bert of Vernal, Ivan, a radar operator in the army air corps; Mrs. Ella K. Goodrich of Bonanza and Elva of Vernal, three brothers and five sisters, Hugh, Merrill, Andy and Nora Watkins, Mrs. Fern McCarrell, all of Vernal, Mrs. Bertha Wilcox, Kennelworth; Mrs. Hannah Winward and Mrs. Nellie Gardiner, both of Vernal and Mrs. Emma Hardy, Lapoint; also 6 grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Naples Ward Chapel and burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park.
