On May 27, 1853, Thomas Barnes gave his wife, Mourning Barnes, power of attorney to transact any and all business on his behalf. He also gave a slave to his son, Thomas W. Barnes "now in his sixteenth year and who has had the misfortune to lose his left arm." (Davidson Co., TN warranty deed book 17, page 259)

On December 31, 1855, an indenture was made "between Mourning Barnes, B.B. Williams ... and Lezinka C. Brown of the same county and state.... Withnesseth that whereas on the 21st November 1854 one Thomas Barnes by deed of trust of that date signed by him and the said B.B. Williams, sold and conveyed to the said B.B. It authorizes the trustee to sell as much property as necessary "to pay off all debts then owing by said Thomas Barnes" and hold the remainder "for the sole and separate use and benefit of the said Mourning for and during the remainder of her natural life free from the future debts and liabilities of said Barnes..."

That whereas the said Thomas Barnes is indebted to ______ person, to an aggregrate amount as he supposes of ten thousand dollars and he is desirous to secure the same, and also to provide for his family wife Mourning Barnes and his children. And therefore in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in ______ and for the other considerations aforesaid, he the said Barnes doth hereby sell and convey the said B.B. Williams his heirs and assigns forever, the tract of land on which he now situates in the said county of Davidson on the Nolensville Turnpike road adjoining that of Dr. Wilson, John Bell & John Rains Sr and John Page containing about four hundred acres and being the same formerly belonging to Samuel Bell." His signature was notarized in Shelby County Tennessee and Mourning's in Davidson County, TN.

Thereafter, all transactions were solely in the name of Mourning Barnes. Thomas Barnes' gravestone says that he died in New Orleans on April 10, 1860.
