FAIRBANKS, Edward was born July 30, 1871 in Ballinafad, County Sligo, Ireland. He came to America about 1894, stopping first in New York City, then travelling to Ohio and finally arriving in Chicago. He married Ida Friess May 9, 1905 and they were the parents of two children, Marian A. (Wagner) and Carol E. Ida died February 1, 1920 and Ed married Mary Diener April 22, 1922. He was first employed as a milk truck driver in Chicago for the Bowman Dairy, then in 1906 moved to Naperville and went to work as a carver at the Naperville Lounge Factory (Kroehlers) and then in 1913 joined the Naperville Police Department. In 1917 he was appointed as Chief of Police and served in that position until 1922 when he was injured in a motorcycle accident. He served in the police department for 35 years, retiring in 1948. He was affectionately known as the “Children’s Policeman”. He was raised a Master Mason May 28, 1921 and exalted a Royal Arch Mason December 12, 1921. He died January 21, 1956 in Winfield, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
