Henry de Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, was the son of Anthony Grey, 11th Earl of Kent, and Mary Lucas, 1st Baroness Lucas of Crudwell. He succeeded his father as 12th Earl of Kent in August 1702, and his mother as 2nd Baron Lucas of Crudwell in November of the same year. He was made Lord Chamberlain and a Privy Counsellor in 1704. He was created Marquess of Kent, Earl of Harold and Viscount Goderich in 1706. He was created 1st Duke of Kent in 1710 and was made a Knight of the Garter in 1712. He married Jemima Crewe daughter of Thomas, 2nd Baron Crew of Stene, and Mary Townshend in 1694. They were the parents of six children. After her death, he married Lady Sophia Bentinck, daughter of William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, and Jane Martha Temple. His second marriage in 1729 produced a son and a daughter. Henry's sons from both marriages predeceased him, and in 1740 he was created 1st Marquess de Grey, with a special remainder to his granddaughter, Jemima Campbell Yorke, Countess of Hardwicke, who would inherit this title. On Henry's death, all his titles, with the exception of the Marquessate de Grey and the Barony of Lucas, became extinct. The Dukedom of Kent would remain extinct for 59 years, until it was created for the fourth son of King George III, and it remains a royal dukedom today.(Additional information provided by A. I.
